Board-certified Plastic Surgeon, The Woodlands, Cypress, NW Houston, Texas Medical Center
Houston plastic surgeon Dr. Bob Basu brings his extensive experience in breast reconstruction from the Texas Medical Center to the local communities of The Woodlands, Cypress, and Northwest Houston and the greater Houston area.
Initially, Dr. Basu was recruited by Baylor College of Medicine to develop and lead a breast reconstruction program as an academic faculty of the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery. After hearing the concerns of his patients who would have to travel long arduous distances for care in the Texas Medical Center, he began seeing and treating his patients closer to home in The Woodlands and Northwest Houston.
With a desire to increase access and availability of state-of-the-art breast reconstruction techniques following mastectomy or lumpectomy, and armed with a vision to provide comprehensive options for restoration after cancer care, Dr. Basu progressed to the inevitable next step to private practice to provide more personalized, private care in a beautiful, relaxed environment of his own creation. He founded The Center for Advanced Breast Restoration – to ultimately bring cutting-edge care closer to home.
Dr. Basu specializes in advanced tissue-only breast reconstruction with the muscle-sparing DIEP flap procedure. In fact, Dr. Basu teamed up with Dr. Kim to pioneer and successfully perform the first DIEP flap breast reconstruction in The Woodlands at the Memorial Hermann – The Woodlands Hospital in August 2008.
In addition to advanced tissue-only reconstruction, Drs. Basu and Kim perform reconstructions with new generation silicone gel implants as well as other techniques tailored to the specific goals of each patient. He also works closely with many breast surgeons and oncologists to provide Onco-Plastic Techniques to restore a woman’s breast following lumpectomy. Both Dr. Basu and Kim are also well-versed with caring for women seeking reconstruction who require radiation therapy.
Dr. Basu graduated magna cum laude from Princeton University (Princeton, NJ) and earned M.D. and M.P.H. degrees from Tufts University School of Medicine. He completed his training at The George Washington University Medical Center Department of Surgery (General Surgery), and Baylor College of Medicine, Division of Plastic Surgery, Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery (Cosmetic & Reconstructive Plastic Surgery).
Dr. Basu is a board certified plastic surgeon and a diplomate of the American Board of Plastic Surgery. He has been recognized as a HTexas Magazine Top Doc in Plastic Surgery and a HTexas Magazine Top Doc for Women. He one of the few plastic surgeons nationally to receive the 2008 American Medical Association Foundation Leadership in Medicine Award for his work in Houston and in Washington, DC advocating for cancer patient’s access to all reconstructive options.
As an Active Member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, he serves on the Instruction Committee on Breast Surgery, the Patient Safety Committee, and serves as a section Vice-Chair for patient advocacy.
