Latissmius Flap Reconstruction
Another option used in reconstructive breast surgery is the latissimus dorsi myocutaneous flap (LDMF). The latissimus dorsi flap is one of the several procedures available that use your own skin, muscle, fat and other tissues for breast reconstruction. It should be noted that breast implants are often used with this procedure to add to the volume of a LDMF reconstructed breast to restore a breast of adequate size (matching the patient’s goals).

The latissimus dorsi is the long muscle that runs beneath the armpit and diagonally across the back; the muscle can be felt along the side of the rib cage when you raise your arm. Due to the muscle’s proximity to the chest area, utilizing the tissue from this region for breast reconstruction after mastectomy is found to be a popular technique among plastic surgeons as it is a reliable procedure that does not require microsurgery.
In addition, the muscle and skin flap can remain attached to its natural blood supply, making the procedure less complicated than the other free flap breast reconstruction surgeries. There is a scar on the back that does fade with time.
